Abstract: |
First in this collection comes a paper from W H Manning & I R Scott (1-24) on 'Timber gateways, with a note on iron fittings', discussing five main types of gateway plan. Brian Hobley (25-61) contributes 'The evidence for the form and appearance of turf and timber defences of Roman forts in the late 1st century, based on experiments at The Lunt Roman fort': he discusses the assumptions made and solutions devised for building simulations (not 'reconstructions'). Derek Welsby's subject is Tripolitanian examples. John Walker (83-111) reports on 'The reconstructed Roman remains at Castlefield, Manchester' where the simulation is in stone. Moving northwards, Julian Bennett (113-41) studies 'The principal gateways of masonry forts on the Hadrianic frontier in England: aspects of their construction, planning and probable appearance': he finds no evidence of a common blueprint, nor of legionary 'signatures', merely individual architects working on the site. James Crow (143-53) provides 'Notes on the north gateway of Milecastle 39, Castle Nick' and offers a reconstruction drawing. The three editors (155-231) discuss 'The reconstruction of a gate at the Roman fort of South Shields', with the evidence on which it was based and an account of the building work. |
