Abstract
The classification of sites discovered through aerial photography: why bother?
Bill Startin
7 - 8
A defence of the programme of classification of sites identified from aerial photographs as part of the work of the Monuments Protection Programme of English Heritage. It is argued that the `MORPH' system, which groups the sites into three categories, will allow the data to be systematically retrieved and ensures some element of quality control in the recording of the morphological characteristics of these sites.
Real archaeology or misunderstood `MORPH'?
Robert H Bewley
9 - 11
A reply to previous contributions on the classification of aerial photographs, stressing that the classification tool, MORPH, is still under development but that there is a need for systematic site classification of this type.
The classification game
Peter D Horne
David MacLeod
12 - 17
A test of MORPH2 - the system used by RCHME to provide morphological descriptions of archaeological sites mapped from aerial photographs - was held and the results of the exercise are presented. The paper is intended as a discussion document for those already familiar with the `classification' debate.
An airship trip
Robert H Bewley
25 - 27
The potential of airships for archaeological aerial reconnaissance work is briefly assessed.
Levels of technology for digitised images in aerial archaeology
John G B Haigh
28 - 30
An introduction to the benefits of digitisation for the analysis of aerial photographs. The necessary computer technology is detailed, together with a consideration of the costs involved.
The AERIAL program, version 4.1
John G B Haigh
31 - 33
The latest version of the main software component of the Bradford Aerial Photograph System is described.
Recent enhancements to Photonet
Roger Harris
34 - 37
The latest developments on the National Library of Air Photographs computer based geographical information system are described. The system enables graphic retrieval of information pertaining to aerial photography. It is now possible to search a variety of geographical area types, including irregular polygons, linear areas and individual counties or National Parks, and obtain graphical output in a variety of forms.
Report on aerial reconnaissance for England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Eire in 1990/91
