The paper re-examines the evidence for the origins of an `early Anglo-Saxon society' in the West Midlands, considering the question of how and why the area appears to have become thoroughly Anglo-Saxon by the late-seventh century.

Report on an archaeological watching brief and excavation carried out at Tallington during 1997 in advance of pipe laying, during which part of a sixth-century Anglo-Saxon inhumation cemetery and medieval building remains were discovered. The report describes seven complete, or nearly complete, graves, one truncated by a medieval pit, and a distinct group of bones and artefacts representing a ploughed-out grave.
