Archaeology and the re-organisation of local government
Ian A G Shepherd
Referring back to recommendations published by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 1974 in advance of the last local government reorganisation, this article summarises the changes that are to be instituted in Scotland in 1996. Fragmentation of the present regional system is thought to pose a threat to local authority archaeology advisers whose posts have been established since 1975 in line with the Society's proposals. These posts are threatened despite recent government planning advice (see 95/800 & 95/801).
