The Latinus Stone marks the grave of a man called Latinus and his unnamed four-year old daughter. It is the oldest Christian monument in Scotland and one of a large group of mainly 10th-century grave markers and crosses forming part of a new display.

The runestone was donated by Alexander Seton (1768-1828) whose interest in runes resulted in the stone being sent to Edinburgh from Lilla Ramsjo. He had family connections with Sweden and his work on the Ruthwell Cross and the Catstane near Edinburgh was a catalyst in the development of connections between Scotland and Sweden.
