Abstract: |
A thin section examination was made of a small number of Early Neolithic to Early Bronze Age sherds recovered from the site of the Potlock cursus and associated features. Four broad fabric groups are represented: [A] large angular quartz, [B] sandstone/quartzite, [C] grog and [D] flint. There is nothing to suggest anything other than a fairly local origin for the pottery, which may have been made utilising the superficial deposits of the area. A comparison was made between a single sherd in the earlier Neolithic Grimston Ware tradition from this site and seven Grimston Ware sherds from Great Briggs Ring-Ditch, 20 miles downstream from Potlock. The fabric of the sherd from Potlock was different to those of Great Briggs, many of which contained igneous inclusions. |
