Abstract
Ledig og skjaldekvad. Det elvte århundredes nordiske krigsflåder, deres teknologi og organisation og deres placering i samfundet, belyst gennem den samtidige fyrstedigtning
Rikke Malmros
88 - 139
Engl summary pp 138-9. Compares the two distinct ship technologies conveyed to us by two kinds of texts, 13th century saga prose and 10th-12th century oral scaldic verse. The first type indicates a new kind of warship, the Grand Ship with 3-8 men per oar, high freeboard, artillery castles, etc. It needs small fast auxiliary craft to assist it in battle. The scalds' quite different concept of the warship matches the 11th century Anglo-Saxon sources and the Bayeux Tapestry; it is long and narrow, with low freeboard, light and resilient, can be dragged overland, 1 man per oar, 40 or more oars. Information is also given on military organization of the entire society from peasants to chieftains.
