Abstract: |
A trial trench evaluation was carried out in advance of the construction of an agricultural irrigation reservoir. Thirty-three trenches and a small open area were excavated (with a total excavated area of 2540m2). Archaeological evidence was very sparse. Ephemeral activity of general prehistoric date, in the form of a number of cooking/boiling pits containing burnt flint, was encountered in the central northern part of the site. This was somewhat isolated and the lack of associated features did not suggest that actual occupation was likely. In the eastern part of the site there was scattered evidence of post-medieval activity in the form of a single isolated burnt pit (undated), three boundary or drainage ditches, a shallow gully/trackway and a pond that most likely originated as a clay/brick pit. None of these features suggested any coherent pattern of occupation worthy of further investigation. Consequently, no further work could be recommended. |
