Abstract: |
Three trenches measuring 5m x 1.8m were excavated within the footprint of a proposed extension and associated access and drainage. All trenches were excavated to the top of the natural sub-soil using a toothless ditching bucket under close archaeological supervision. In trenches 1 and 2 the orange brown gravel forming the natural sub-soil [3] was overlain by a grey brown silty clay subsoil [2] and a dark grey brown topsoil [1]. In trench 3 the natural subsoil [3] was truncated by a modern ceramic drainage pipe, and a sub-circular pit [5]. Pit [5] measured 1.10m x 0.80m, 0.26m deep, and was filled with coarse orange brown sand [4]. Fill [4] contained several large sherds of Prehistoric pot. Overlying context [5] was sub-soil [2] and topsoil [1]. No other archaeological features were identified during the evaluation |
