Abstract: |
A desk-based archaeological assessment in advance of various new proposals for the racecourse. The main aims of the study were to 1) Assess the archaeological interest of the standing buildings 2) Assess the likely survival of buried archaeological deposits The listed main stand and the late 19th-century stable staff accommodation at the west end of the race course are the most historic buildings on the site. The study did not identified any archaeological sites in the north west part of the race course. However, on the clays to the east there are a number of pottery manufacturing kilns and what appears to be an extensive system of fields and enclosures of possible prehistoric/Romano-British date. There are also finds of prehistoric date and records of ditches from early 20th-century observations and recoveries during construction work on the stands. |
