Abstract: |
Trial trenching was undertaken across the line of the Roman road in order to inform the conservation strategy for the site. Most of the trenches showed that little if any of the original road survived, with what patches of cobbling were present, clearly overlying modern features, but one trench did appear to have some intact foundation layers. Three shallow undated gullies were also recorded. The area examined may not have been extensive enough to have covered the entire likely width of this major Roman road, the flanking ditches of which were 25m apart not far from this point. |
