Abstract: |
An exploratory excavation at the small defended homestead at Airyolland 1, near Elrig, Wigtownshire (NMRS No.: NX34NW 14; SMR No.: MDG2378). Two trenches were excavated within the enclosure, one over the rampart, the other in the interior of the site. The rampart trench (Tr. 1) encountered a massive stone wall 3.4m in width and an associated post-hole. The interior trench (Tr.2) encountered the remains of wall footings on small buildings, but the excavations were too limited to locate their extents. No significant finds were recovered, although quantities of metallic slag were recovered from environmental samples. A detailed topographic survey was also carried out using terrestrial laser scanning. |
