Abstract: |
Evaluation of the second stage of reconstruction at Liberty Village, RAF Lakenheath demonstrated an open chalk heath landscape with little evidence of human occupation. Some truncation during house building in the 1960''s was indicated but this was not severe enough to suggest that all evidence of occupation could have been destroyed. A search of available aerial photographs for the whole Liberty Village area demonstrated some areas under cultivation during the 20th century, but also areas under heathland and military buildings. Only two archaeological features were identified, an E-W aligned ditch in the northeast corner of the development area, which probably formed part of a field system and trackway identified in Phase 1 of the Liberty Village excavations and in earlier archaeological work north of Lord''s Walk, and a possible curving bank at the southern edge of the development area. |
