Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was conducted in advance of the construction of 260 residential flats and associated services on land at the former Britannia Ironworks, Kempston Road, Bedford. The work was undertaken by Albion Archaeology on behalf of BMH Construction Company (Clifton) Ltd. A condition has been attached to the planning permission requires the implementation of a scheme of archaeological investigation. This consisted of archaeological field evaluation in the form of trial trenching, and the subsequent implementation of an agreed programme of archaeological investigation and recording (if required). Four evaluation trenches were excavated, located to provide even coverage across the area, while avoiding known electrical services on the eastern margin. All of the trenches contained structural evidence associated with the former ironworks in the form of wall footings, concrete pads, construction layers, surfaces and floors. At the north of the site, adjacent to the river, layers of clay, gravel or soil mixed with industrial waste were used to level the site and reclaim an area of marshy ground along the river edge. Evidence for post ironworks activity consisted of layers of demolition debris found across the whole area. Along the southern edge of the area the former ground surface had been covered by a deep layer of soil and building debris, deposited during the recent construction of buildings to the south of the evaluated area. The presence of undisturbed geological strata and buried soil horizons shows that despite the presence of extensive nineteenth and twentieth century activity, the survival of earlier evidence would be possible. However, no archaeological evidence was found for activity on the site that predates the nineteenth century industrial use of the site.
