Abstract: |
A programme of conservation and modification to Batemans Barn, a building forming part of the South Elmham Hall moated complex, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, required archaeological recording. Examination of the flint and mortar walls incorporated in the existing building confirmed their medieval date and identified constructional features (lift-lines), but no architectural detail. Later phases of patching, rebuilding and surface treatments were also recorded. Monitoring of two trenches excavated by the contractors, one to the west of the barn and one inside, failed to identify any archaeological deposits. |
