Abstract:
Northamptonshire Archaeology was commissioned in July 2004 by Archaeologia Ltd, acting on behalf of Bellcross Home; following an initial watching brief and trial trenching, to undertake a small excavation ahead of residential development on land adjacent to 175 Lower Shelton Road, Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire. The earliest activity found was the excavation of three small pits which contained pottery dating to the Iron Age. The only indication of a Romano-British and Saxon presence was limited redeposited pottery in later features. The The main activity on the site occurred during the medieval period, with the laying out of a single plot of land. Within a short period of time the plot was subdivided creating a service access within the wider manor site. A building was later constructed over the earlier boundary. This may have been a bake-house or kitchen building, possibly associated with the 16th century Shelton Manor. In the post-medieval period the earlier plots were amalgamated and a large ditch defined the eastern boundary of activity. Two large pits were connected to the ditch, perhaps for water management. The remains of a post-medieval structure was found during the June 2004 watching brief.
