Abstract: |
A Roman villa partly excavated in 1999 is being preserved under a public open space within a new housing development. An adjacent area was investigated by open area excavation prior to development. A small sub rectangular enclosure dating to the mid 1st century AD adds to previous evidence for occupation predating the villa. At the north-eastern corner of the villa precinct a series of shallow ditches had fallen out of use before a kiln was constructed in the late 2nd or early 3rd century. The 3rd to 4th century activity comprised a shallow pond and associated pits and ditches. A pit on the margin of the pond contained a small hoard of late Roman coins, probably deposited in the 370s AD. In the 4th century extensive dumps of iron smelting debris were deposited in a series of shallow hollows. A small quantity of 5th century pottery and a single Anglo-SAxon inhumatio burial, radiocarbon dated to the 7th century, show that there was later activity around the villa site. |
