Abstract: |
A programme of archaeological works was requested in connection with planning conditions issued by Scottish Borders Council. The work consisted of a survey of the historic farm buildings that form part of the development site. The project involves the conversion of existing farm buildings for housing and the construction of additional housing on adjacent plots. The steading was founded in the 18th century as part of agricultural improvement and included a barn, byre and stable with a detached farm house (NT14NE 71), all associated with Halmyre House (NT14NE 19.00). Later additions included a water house, an electric power plant, a larger cartshed and alterations to the existing buildings. The majority of surviving features are 19th century including some original window frames. 20th century alteration involved roofing over large areas to form cattle courts and the removal of some areas of earlier fabric. |
