Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at 260-268 Poplar High Street, London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The aim of the evaluation was to assess the impact of the proposed development on any surviving archaeological remains. The evaluation comprised the excavation of two machine excavated trenches . Natural alluvial sands were identified between -0.11 and 0.21m OD. Sealing the sand in Trench 1 was a layer of dark organic subsoil and garden soil, overlain by 19th and 20th century made ground. In Trench 2 the alluvial deposits were sealed by the same subsoil and garden soil as observed in trench 1. Deposits of 20th century made ground sealed these deposits. Overlying these was a bedding layer of crushed hardcore sealed by the present concrete slab. No archaeological remains or residual finds were identified in any of the trenches. Trenches were examined for palaeoenvironmental potential. However, no peat deposits were observed.
