Abstract: |
Monitoring was carried out during the removal of a hedgebank in advance of the construction of an agricultural building. A section across the hedge was examined and recorded. The hedgebank forms part of a medieval field system, altered by the enlargement of fields during the latter 20th century. The westernmost 32m of the bank had been removed prior to arrival (Fig. 1).The hedgebank (Fig. 2) measured 800mm high and 2.1m wide. The original ground surface (buried soil), had not survived; the hedge core (102 and 101) lying directly over natural subsoil (103). A shallow ditch was present to the south side of the hedge although this had been heavily disturbed by machine movement. There was heavy root disturbance throughout the recorded section. |
