Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment identified that significant mine workings and a railway line running east west once occupied part of the application area, but are no longer upstanding within the evaluation area. Fifty-nine trial trenches were excavated within the evaluation area at Starlaw Farm, to provide 5200m2 of evaluation, or circa 8% of the defined area. The evaluation identified two modern pits cut through the topsoil and filled with topsoil. Numerous field drains were encountered during excavation. The spreads of shale are presumably related to the storage of waste derived from the mining activities that took place within the application area. |
