Abstract: |
This site, being developed by Stewart Milne Homes, is bounded on the north by Wellington Place, on the east by South College Street, on the south by Portland Street and on the west by the rear of 157-171 Crown Street. The site overlies part of the area used from the mid 18th century, and possibly earlier, for brick, tile and pottery manufacture, using the clay beds which gave the area the name ''Clayhills''. The earliest use of the name ''Clayhills'' is unknown. The structures of the Brick and Tile Works, the Pottery and their clay banks and pits can be seen on Milne''s map of 1789 and on the first Ordnance Survey of 1867 it is still marked as ''Clayhills Brick and Tile Works''. By 1901 the site appears to have been redefined as a commercial and residential area. |
