Abstract: |
An initial field Evaluation on the site comprised the machine excavation of 3 trenches . Natural river gravels in Trench 1 were cut by pits containing sherds of later medieval pottery. Other features in Trench 1 consisted of the foundations of a 19th century building, a small undated pit and a larger modern pipe trench. Trench 2 contained inter-cutting pits that contained fragments of ceramic pipe and pantile dating the features to the 17th or 18th century. A large rectangular slate lined feature was of late 19th century date and was associated with the houses constructed on the site in this period. Trench 3 had suffered extensive late post-medieval truncation to a depth of over 3m below ground level, no archaeological features survived in this trench. The evaluation was followed by limited excavation in the form of an additional trench measuring 10.00m x 10.00m at base. The excavation was targeted on the medieval features identified in the archaeological evaluation. This additional trench identified a number of cut features associated with the later medieval occupation of Barking. |
