Abstract: |
Watching brief maintained during ground reduction and subsequent trenching operations, prior to redevelopment of the site as residential accommodation. The initial reduction of overburden exposed no archaeological deposits and was insufficiently deep to expose natural ground throughout. Return visits were therefore made during trenching operations. Trenches measured approximately 900mm wide and 1.1m deep. No features or deposits were present. A very simple stratigraphic sequence was exposed consisting of approximately 300mm of overburden overlying clean natural ground comprising red clay. The only exception to this sequence was in the SE corner of the site where a 500mm thick layer of redeposited natural ground was exposed above natural subsoil and below modern overburden. No pottery or other dating evidence was found. |
