Abstract:
The Study Area is located in an area of permanent grassland, which straddles the River Great Ouse floodplain and the adjacent gravel terrace. An earli erdesk-based assessment identified a number of archaeological sites in the area, ranging from prehistoric to post-medieval in date, and the Study Area lies adjacent to a scheduled ancient monument. In order to assess the archaeological impact of the proposed development a tiered scheme of archaeological research has been undertaken to determine the location, extent and nature of any archaeological features and assess their integrity and state of preservation. The stages comprised: a review of air photograph evidence (undertaken in September 2001); geophysical survey (undertaken in September 2001); trial excavation (undertaken in February 2002). The evaluation identified three distinct and significant phases of former land use: the northern edges of a small Neolithic/Bronze Age barrow cemetery; Early/Middle Iron Age occupation on a low gravel terrace at the north-western end of the Study Area; and Late Iron Age/Romano-British settlement on a higher terrace to the south-east, which is the continuation of a site excavated in 2000. The archaeological remains were well preserved, with waterlogged conditions conducive to the preservation of organic remains and environmental evidence. Significant palaeotopographical evidence was also recorded, in the form of an apparently complex series of palaeochannels and extensive areas of alluvium. Some of the alluvial deposits are likely to pre-date the Early Iron Age.
