Abstract:
During June and July 2006, Archaeological Solutions Ltd (AS) conducted an archaeological desk-based assessment and trial trench evaluation on land north of Scandstick, Black Horse Farm, Old North Road, Sawtry, Cambridgeshire (NGR TL 1767 8345). The assessment and evaluation were commissioned prior to the proposed commercial/industrial redevelopment of the site. Archaeological investigations have been undertaken previously adjacent to the site (Murray and Pearson 2000; O''Brien 2002; Eddisford, O''Brien and Williamson, 2004; Nicholson, and Weston, 2006). An excavation to the immediate south of the site in 2004/2005 revealed evidence of a middle Iron Age fen edge settlement. The site lies close to the Roman Ermine Street and south of a late Iron Age and Romano-British roadside settlement. Medieval remains in the vicinity include remains of ridge and furrow cultivation and the demolished former parish church. Archaeological evaluation revealed small-scale archaeological remains, consisting of brick walls, a timber post, a backfilled well, and a pet burial, all dating to the 19th or 20th centuries. Undated remains include a linear feature, a pit or hollow, and a ditch containing medieval pottery.
