Abstract:
Three evaluation trenches located at the base of a c.70m section of West Wall to determine the depth and condition of the foundations in order to inform the repair of the wall. Although the lowest foundations were located, they were considered to be too shallow to have supported the original medieval city wall and were more likely related to a much later realignment, probably sometime after the mid-18th century as suggested by documentary and artefactual evidence. Disturbance caused by human and root activity of the foundations was also noted.
