Abstract:
Excavation revealed settlement dating to the 5th to 2nd centuries BC, flowed by a short- lived phase of arable use (attested by ditches bounding long, narrow plots) and finally by pastoral use. The final abandonment of the site was probably due to flooding. The earliest evidence of settlement comprised a roundhouse with an associated post built structure and pit ovens. A second roundhouse is thought to have been built slightly later and a substantial ditched enclosure was created around it. A second circular structure, possibly an outhouse or animal pen, is associated with the second roundhouse, as is a cluster of pit ovens and spreads of cooking debris. An infant was buried south-east of its south-east facing entrance. The roundhouse remained in use until the 2nd century BC but was eventually abandoned, probably because of increasing wetness. Its enclosure, however, was maintained and used as a corral in the mid 1st century BC-mid 1st century AD. At this time a pair of droveway ditches was dug running north-west from the enclosure's entrance towards Ermine Street. As well as the infant buried in association with the roundhouse, a second infant was recovered from the upper fill of an enclosure ditch (5th-2nd century BC), an adult inhumation (id 1st century BC-mid 1xst century D) was present to the north, and an undated cremation to the south.
