Abstract:
A programme of archaeological works comprising evaluation, watching brief and excavation was carried out in advance of a proposed retail development at the Bon Accord Centre, Aberdeen. The evaluation identified archaeological deposits in the east of the development area. This led to a full excavation of the areas of the site where archaeological features and deposits had survived later disturbance. The medieval phases of activity were marked by the build-up of occupation deposits and the excavation of pits, which commonly contained waterlogged clay and clay silt fills, conducive to the survival of organic material including a remarkable quantity of artefacts such as leather and wood. Pottery recovered from these phases has tentatively been dated to the 13th to 15th centuries, possibly earlier. Worked leather appears in many pit fills, indicating that processes such as tanning may have been undertaken. Linear cut features were also recorded, generally functioning mainly as drainage features. The base of stake and wattle fence lines ran parallel with the Gallowgate. Two large barrel-lined well cuts were recorded, one of which was topped by a circular stone structure. Probable hearth cuts with associated stone structures were also identified. Structural remains included clay-bonded stone walls, which represented the remains of boundaries and perhaps buildings and several stone-filled soakaways. Late medieval and post-medieval activity included the remains of rubble boundary walls.
