Abstract: |
This archaeological watching brief took place during the construction of a new road which cut through the former site of the 19th century Newport Ironworks (HER 1822). In the majority of places the depth of strip did not reveal archaeological deposits, however in two areas deeper excavation was necessary. Archaeological features largely consisted of brick built flues and associated structures. Deposits were noted to be particularly well preserved. The interpretation of the structures was difficult due to truncation in places and significant alterations during the use of the structures. It is possible that the flues and chimney at the north of the site are related to a former water cooling plant. |
