Abstract: |
To determine the archaeological risk posed by application to construct a new kitchen and toilet facilities, a programme of archaeological evaluation was undertaken. Machining revealed a flat 18th century tombstone, approximately 0.10m below the surface. The tomb covered a third of the area investigated and consisted of a flat stone slab, laid on a stone collar and supported by stepped brickwork. Five courses of brickwork were revealed which continued below the impact level of the proposed new development. The inscription recorded the burial of Isaac Dawes, bricklayer and citizen of London in 1740. Previous surveys of existing graves had not identified this tomb, suggesting that it had been obscured for a long time. |
