Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during groundworks for new public conveniences in West Central Car Park, Devizes. The castle's outer bailey ditch was examined during the watching brief. Dating evidence was unfortunately sparse and somewhat mixed. Upper fills fo the ditch produced almost equal qiuantities of medieval and post-medieval pottery. Whilst it is possible teh ditch was still at least partly open to recevie 16th- to 18th- century finds, it is just as likely the area examined has been disturbed or contaminated. A small number of other gullies all remained undated. |
