Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was commissioned by Atkins Water and Environment on behalf of their client in advance of the redevelopment of an area of ground. The archaeological works were designed to satisfy the requirements of the local planning authority, as advised by the West of Scotland Archaeology Service (WoSAS) and are in accordance with the principles inherent in NPPG 5 (SOEnd 1994) and PAN 42 (SOEnd 1994a). The objective of the work was to record the nature, extent, date, character, quality, significance and state of preservation of any archaeological remains affected by the ground-works during the development of the site. The work was carried out during February-March 2008 and was conducted according to the terms of a Written Scheme of Investigation (AOC 2008) which was agreed by WoSAS, and approved by the planning authority. The watching brief monitored topsoil stripping and the excavation of foundations and service trenches. The watching brief revealed several sandstone walls relating to the former Victorian school building. No features or artefacts of archaeological significance were observed. No further archaeological works are recommended.
