Abstract: |
Headland Archaeology conducted an evaluation and earthwork survey at Wynyard Park, Cleveland, County Durham to test the archaeological potential of an area of land in advance of a business park development. The work was commissioned by Enviros on behalf of Wynyard Park Ltd and was undertaken in response to a planning condition. A total of sixty-seven trenches were excavated showing that agricultural remains, in the form of furrows, survived across parts of the development area. The spacing between these and pottery recovered from them suggested that they dated to the medieval period. An area of upstanding ridge and furrow measuring 165m by 74m was surveyed and shown to survive to a height of up to 0.5m. Two features of archaeological interest were discovered in proximity to each other. A small curvilinear feature, containing fragments of prehistoric pottery, and a north-south aligned ditch containing charcoal and burnt clay were found on an area of flat high ground. No relationship between these features was evident. The features are likely to relate to a small prehistoric settlement. |
