Abstract:
A desk based assessment and field evaluation was undertaken prior to the redevelopment of land at Bank Street. Two trenches were excavated and found evidence in support of features visible on the Ordnance Survey 1st and 2nd Edition maps. Strong evidence for buildings in the form of wall foundations were found in each trench. The character of the earliest of these building sequences, constructed from cobble and rubble, also appears to be contiguous with the construction of the planned town by Robert Graham in the late 18th century. No evidence of medieval activity was found, suggesting the medieval settlement did not extend this far to the east.
