Abstract:
Rathmell Archaeology carried out works required by Muir Homes to in advance of the extension proposed plan for the A9 Loaninghead Junction Development, Auchterader. The area of the study area is currently a greenfield site extending to 840m2 in extent (NGR NN 92090 09647). The works carried out from 19th to the 26th January 2009, involved the machine stripping and selective hand cleaning of an area 120m by 7m and the subsequent excavation of exposed archaeological features. These works proceeded on the recommendations of earlier investigations. The excavation revealed a series of negative features consisting of a possible ring groove, a prehistoric curving post alignment and linear ditches which showed the presence of prehistoric activity within close proximity to the Peterhead Farm Standing Stone. Given the truncation of the features and limited size of the excavation it is difficult to be anything other than speculative concerning the activity these features represent..
