Abstract: |
Following a planning application for the construction of two dwellings on land at Cross Lane in Kendal and desk-based assessment was carried out by Greenlane Archaeology. This revealed that the site was situated at the west end of the medieval burgage plots running from Kirkland, one of the earliest parts of the town. Previous excavation work in the area had revealed truncated medieval deposits but no features, and the earliest standing buildings on the site only seem to be of 18th century origin. On one part of the site buildings utilised by a wool stapler in the 19th century are still extant, and elsewhere there was a row of cottages which were demolished by 1899 and were evidently connected to Kirkbarrow House a short distance to the south. Recommendations for further work including a watching brief, evaluation and building recording were made. |
