Abstract: |
This desk based assessment took place in order to define the likely extent of the former chapel of St. Helen (Tees HER 0695) and associated Holy Well (Tees HER 0694) prior to the demolition and rebuilding of the Durham Street Fire Station constructed in 1964. The report for the work considers cartographic sources, the HER, archive material held by the Museum of Hartlepool and written histories. The assessment sets out the history of the chapel throughout the medieval period alongside evidence from later archaeological interventions (Tees Events 707-708) and accidental discoveries in the 19th century. The report recommended that further archaeological research take place in the form of trial trenching which was actioned in the same year (see Tees Event 710). |
