Abstract:
Targeted trench evaluation, following a geophysical survey, in advance of a proposed extension of a clay quarry at Swillington, West Yorkshire. 36 trenches were excavated in two separate areas. Two overlapping field systems were encountered: the older was interpreted as Roman, the newer as medieval or post-medieval. The later field system was associated with a double-ditched track or droveway. Also found were a pit containing burnt clay and stones, with Anglo-Scandinavian and early medieval pottery, and a roughly circular ditched enclosure, probably medieval.
