Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was conducted on road workings outside The Maltings, Castle Precincts, Lewes, East Sussex (NGR 541445 110190). The work was carried out on 29th April by Archaeology South-East on behalf of the client British Telecommunications PLC. Works to excavate an underground duct were monitored in order to assess the archaeological potential of the site and record any remains that were likely to be disturbed. The site lies within the grounds of Lewes Castle and as such is subject to Scheduled Monument Consent with a high potential for Norman period material to be found as well as slight potential for Romano-British and prehistoric activity. The natural geology comprised undivided Upper and Middle Chalk, indicated on British Geological Survey Sheet 319. This being part of the prominent chalk spur jutting out into the Ouse valley which became the principal focus of the historic settlement of Lewes. The works did not extend deeper than 0.33 metres below the pavement and did not extend beyond the made ground makeup and previous service trench activity; no archaeological features were identified. |
