Abstract: |
Following a planning application for the construction of residential properties on Upper Brook Street, Ulverston, Cumbria a programme of archaeological investigation was requested by the Cumbria County Council Historic Environment Service (CCCHES). This comprised a desk-based assessment and archaeological evaluation in conjunction with a watching brief on major ground works. In addition, the recording of a warehouse on the site that was to be incorporated into the development was also requested. The archaeological excavations revealed the presence of walls, floor surfaces and drains on the site which were cut into the natural geology and buried under 19th and 20th century overburden. These findings tied in well with the results of the desk-based assessment which showed a brewery occupying the site from the early 19th century onwards. Unfortunately, due to the landscaping required to remove the upslope to the rear of the plot, the construction of the brewery had truncated any earlier archaeological deposits that may have existed on the site. Documentary sources demonstrate that the remaining building was one of a number of warehouses on Upper Brook Street, and that this area of town was a focus for light industrial activity in the 19th century. The warehouse was built between 1832 and 1852 and it appears to have largely retained its original form. The building recording revealed five main phases of building and alteration, the earliest of which comprises the construction and consolidation of the working warehouse. Changing usage of the neighbouring brewery plot afforded the opportunity for alterations and caused the need for repairs in the first half of the 20th century. Minor alterations have subsequently occurred up to the present day. |
