Abstract: |
South West Archaeology Ltd (SWARCH) conducted desk-based research and historic building recording on the Old Gaol during conversion works to the rear (north) of numbers 22 and 23 East Street, South Molton. The building is Grade II listed and falls within the South Molton Conservation Area. The Old Gaol is part of a small complex of buildings probably constructed between 1828 and 1838 and is an example of a utilitarian and reforming approach to the detention of criminals, replacing a far less sanitary or secure institution. Many of the elements indicative of the building's former and original use are still preserved. Where building works have been carried out much has been done to reinstate the original structure. Evidence for later uses of the building suggest a possible reading room and military use. |
