Abstract:
an archaeological watching brief was undertaken to observe the installation of drainage services and traffic management systems within the grounds of West Norwood Cemetery. Such archaeological investigations were commissioned due to the potential for disturbing unmarked burials. The archaeological observations undertaken were associated with a single pipe trench cut through access roads to the north of the cemetery. These works have demonstrated that modern made ground deposited prior to the construction of the access roads lies directly above London Clay, suggesting that the land surface had been truncated in the course of previous construction works. Finds were limited to a single disarticulated human long bone, thought to have been disturbed from its original burial by tree root activity, and numerous fragmented headstones. Of the deposits observed, none were deemed to possess any significant archaeological value. Apart from the single human bone recovered, no other human remains were encountered.
