Abstract: |
In September 2010, Archaeological Solutions Ltd conducted an archaeological evaluation at 41 Middletons Road, Yaxley, Cambridgeshire in advance of the proposed construction of new dwellings. The medieval core of the village lies between 500m and 900m west of the site around Manor Farm. Fishponds and ditches have been found in the vicinity of the medieval manor house. The Grade I Listed Church of St Peter dates from the 13th century, and remains of the shrunken medieval village are nearby. The majority of the archaeological features revealed during the evaluation were located in the northern sector of the site. The features are relatively dense in Trench 1 comprising three ditches, two pits and a possible tree hollow. The dating evidence was sparse and the features were not securely dated. A Cobbled Surface incorporating 12th-14th century pottery, again abraded, was identified, but the associated CBM suggests a post-medieval date for the feature. The medieval sherds are likely residual derived from activity in the vicinity of the site. |
