Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology during groundworks associated with the erection of an extension to Hailes House, Hailes, Stanway, Gloucestershire. Hailes house is located within Scheduled Ancient Monument 28850, Hailes Abbey and Ringwork. Structural remains, comprising walls, a floor and a culvert, were observed and were preserved in situ. Similar structural remains, within a similar sequence of deposits, were identified during a preceding evaluation. The limited exposure of the structural remains during both the evaluation and the watching brief makes interpretation difficult, but they are likely to have formed parts of external yard areas or of former buildings. Although the structural remains remained undated, 17th/18th-century finds recovered from the overlying make-up layers during the evaluation suggests that the structures pre-date the documented post-medieval landscaping of the abbey grounds |
