Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned to undertake a programme of archaeological works on the Metropole Building / 10 Whitehall Place in the London Borough of Westminster. A trial trench evaluation was undertaken as the first stage of investigation to establish the potential for survival of archaeological remains on the Site. This demonstrated that the construction of the double basement in 10 Whitehall Place had removed any archaeological remains that may have existed within the basement footprint. This resulted in no further archaeological work being required in this area.It can be concluded that the archaeological fieldwork has sufficiently addressed the principal aims of the project in establishing the date, character and extent of surviving archaeological deposits at the Site. The work has confirmed that the construction of the existing buildings during the Victorian period have had a severe impact on any archaeological features or deposits that may have existed, |
