Abstract: |
A photographic record, by Geoff Potter of Compass Archaeology, prior to refurbishment of a late 18th century Listed building and additionally a field evaluation to the rear. The trial trenching did not produce significant results. The southern part of the site retained a more or less intact soil profile, but only produced evidence for 19th/20th century cultivation. To the north the ground had been heavily truncated by terracing, possibly during construction of the Listed building. One surviving pit produced a substantial pottery assemblage of c. 1750-70, probably discarded as a group over a short period from a fairly affluent household. Fabrics ranged from common kitchen and storage wares to teawares, pieces from good quality services and Chinese export porcelain. Natural deposits were exposed in all areas: silty sand with gravel (Head) to the south and truncated clay to the north. |
