Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief, by Mick Miles of Compass Archaeology, during foundation groundworks revealed no archaeological finds or features. A trench c. 1m deep x 0.5m wide was dug to receive concrete footings for a timber framed house, around a footprint c. 7.5m x 8m in plan. Two internal L-shaped trenches of similar dimensions were also dug and monitored. The stratigraphy was c. 150mm of light topsoil covering the remnants of a brickearth layer up to 350mm thick, this in turn overlay the undulating surface of natural Upper Chalk. It appeared that there was a gradual sloping down of the chalk towards the northwest. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted. The spoil was examined for finds, but only 20th century material was seen. |
