Abstract:
Archaeological watching brief during Victorian water mains replacement works in and adjacent to the churchyard which was the site of a medieval church (12th C but largely rebuilt) and graveyard. Two trenches were excavated within the churchyard itself, located outside the church west entrance and north of the entrance. The northern trench measured 1m by 3m by 1m deep, the southern trench measured 1m by 1m by 0.8m deep. In each case the Victorian mains was exposed. The trench profile consisted of a soil and rubble backfill layer under the present ground make-up. A further trench was excavated outside the northern gate of the churchyard measuring 1m by 3m by 1m deep, and a shallow cut 0.5m by 7m by 0.3m deep. The deeper trench again exposed the Victorian pipe and an identical profile to the above trenches. The shallow trench contained a soil and rubble backfill layer under the present ground make-up. A final trench was excavated outside the southern gate of the churchyard measuring 1m by 3m by 1m deep. The Victorian pipe was exposed under a soil and rubble backfill layer beneath the present ground make-up. There were no archaeological features or deposits observed in any of the trenches. There was no evidence of in situ burials, charnel or loose bone.
