Abstract: |
An archaeological Watching Brief at the above site involved the hand excavation of a north-south telecommunications trench. The trench measured 38m in length, was 45cm deep and 22.5cm wide. The watching brief area lies within the precinct of the London Charterhouse 1371-1538. Prior to the foundation much of the square seems to have been used as a Black Death burial ground and probably remained in use thereafter as a public cemetery. About 75% (c.28m) of the excavated trench was monitored excluding the northern end. The trench utilised the route of existing services and revealed only 20th century backfill. There were no archaeological finds or features and natural deposits/strata were not encountered. NB: the levels shown on the form below show levels of the depth of excavation and not the level of natural in this area. |
